Andy also forwarded this official release:
Kapp & Peterson has been experimenting with textured finishes for many years now — from retooling and refining rustication techniques as well as completely overhauling and rebuilding the marque’s sandblasting process to adhere more closely to artisanal pipe-making practices. While those efforts have led to impressive results, including a more refined rustication pattern and some immaculate sandblasted finishes (like those bearing the marque’s PSB designation), Peterson has continued to experiment and is proud to introduce a brand new, premium textured finish: the Cobble.
Peterson’s Cobble incorporates the character of the factory’s finest sandblasted and rusticated pipes, resulting in a deep, craggy appearance fitting to its name. While many marques and workshops produce “dual-finished” pipes, Peterson’s Cobble is more than the sum of its parts. Though incorporating aspects of both Peterson’s signature rustication and sandblasting style, the finish itself required completely new techniques in both regards, including new tooling and procedures.
I love the twin-bead sterling band and glad to see it in use again!
The goal was to create a finish reminiscent of early 20th century English sandblasts — defined by their immensely craggy texture and uniquely rugged aesthetic — that also maintained the leading lines of any given pipe shape. The Kapp & Peterson team experimented with many different techniques to achieve this result until Sykes himself developed the first prototype after hours “playing” in the blasting cabinet.
Kapp & Peterson’s Managing Director Glen Whelan is responsible for coming up with the name Cobble, alluding to the finish’s similarities to the cobblestone streets synonymous with old Dublin. Whelan says,
Street in Temple Bar, Dublin
“The idea for the name Cobble came from the similarities with this finish and the famed cobble-paved streets which are synonymous with Ireland. The cobbled streets share a uniformity in aesthetic, but it’s only after you get up close to them that you see the uniqueness that has been carved into them from hundreds of years of history. This is the essence of our new Cobble finish in the factory and what we are trying to achieve. In the early stages of production, the pipes will all share a uniformity but once we move them to the sandblasting stage, we unearth the uniqueness in each and every pipe. Using our iconic red/black stain allows us to further highlight the contrasting areas of grain structure on the surface of the bowl.
Given the importance of this year in Peterson’s history, we felt it very important to do something innovative that would feel like a landmark moment for us. I feel with this brand new finish, we have absolutely achieved this. I can see future historical timelines for Peterson marking this year as when the Cobble was first released and that is really exciting for us all here to continue making moments in the factory’s storied history.”
The result is a pipe that uses Peterson’s iconic rustication as frames of sorts, creating windows of grain that undulate across the bowl. It’s the marque’s craggiest yet most detailed finish to date — one worthy of a spot in any Pete Geek’s rotation.
Many thanks to Andy & the whole crew @ Smokingpipes.com!

Im in for a 03
I’m digging this finish.
Hmm, 701 or a 15
Nope. Don’t like it. I really don’t like the rustication finish lately. This is a tad better, on account of the blasting, but nowhere near 1980s rustications.
Beautiful. Elegantly rustic or rustically elegant? I think I prefer the first. Thanks Mark and well done to the Peterson craftsfolk. I know craftspeople is the generally accepted term, but it makes me think of Nastassja Kinski and big cats.
I like these. Very nice look. There are two things that will prevent me from buying; firstly, no systems – but I could overlook that on these. Secondly, the USD to CAD exchange and duties. – that really slams the door shut for me. It is absolutely ridiculous how much that adds to the pipe. I suppose I could send it to my son in Florida but then I won’t see it for 6 months until I’m there.
Incredibly exciting! This160th anniversary year is proving to be a real winner! The innovation and creativity never end here. Now if we could see some shapes with thicker walls.
Very very nice upgrade to previous rusticated finish! I do own Derry XL02, gift from my wife to my 35th birthday and I love how it smokes – best, sweetest smoking pipe I have in my collection but the finish could have been a bit more pleasing. Now with this Cobble rustication Peterson hit the nail on the head! I hope there will be more pipes released with Cobble finish and especially something in 9mm filter as I do prefer filtered pipes. Old school in a good way, stylish and just wonderful!
Nice twist on the finish and should feel great in the hand.
A nice varied look for pipes. I really enjoy Peterson’s rusticated. I have many different kinds from ‘pineapple’, to ‘pinecone’ to the one that looks like it was hit by shotgun pellets that were pried out of it. I appreciate the variety & all those Petes smoke well too! Additionally,
thank you for the link to some really GREAT music of yesterday. The Call & The Proclaimers were a large part of my personal Soundtrack of that era.
Got my 120 , thanks for the heads up
Settled for the 05 rather than the 03, getting to the sterling band I would personally like to see more of the twin-bead bands,my opinion more class conjunction with .925 and also a side note a deeper cut for the shelf like the old PLips have
Just stunning!!!!!
