316. SPECIAL BULLETIN: The Sherlock Holmes Heritage Finish Drops in the U.S. on 12/14

SPECIAL BULLETIN: Released in Europe on Tuesday, 12/6, the U.S. drop for the Sherlock Holmes Collection in the Heritage finish will be, per Andy Wike, “Wed 12/14 @ 6:00pm” EST. That’s just enough time for those needing to fill out their Christmas stockings here in the States, and more than enough if they celebrate the full Twelve Days of Christmas, December 25-January 5th. El Dia de los Reyes, Three Kings Day (Epiphany in many liturgical calendars), follows on January 6th, ushering in the Season of Light, and is traditional day for gift-giving among many in Mexico, Central and South America as well as their families here in the U.S.

In addition to the Original (left) and Baskerville (right) above, here’s ten more of the fourteen shapes being released. A Stan Lee ‘No Prize’ if you can name them all without looking at the end of the post:*

And here’s the fabulous poster / electronic strutcard for those PGs who love and collect them:

With thanks to Andy Wike, Josh Burgess, Kapp & Peterson & Smokingpipes.eu
for photos and media materials

* In order:

Adler
Norton
Stoner
Windibank
Bradstreet
Wilson
Hatherly
Openshaw
Whitney
Spaulding

BTW, Charles Mundungus sent this tip in from Lake Geneva: “I like to cover the garage walls where I house my ’51 Nash Airflyte Rambler with these. I save them as PDFs and take them down to FedEx. The charge is minimal for a 3 x 5 footer and the effect is maximal. Sometimes I just have to sit and smoke my Petes out there to enjoy them all. Especially when the neighbor upstairs is having one of her parties.”

I’m glad I despise the Heritage finish. I really can’t afford another Pete right now.

I’m with you, John. On both counts. I’ve bought far too many Petes this year to even entertain another purchase before 2023. Luckily, I find the Heritage finish to be singularly unattractive. I’d rather see grain than brush marks.

Oh John you were so close! But sadly you got the last one wrong, it is a Bakerstreet. Lol

Jokes aside I’m in agreeance on this finish, I was hoping for something a little brighter. This just says ” full of fills” like my 2020 xmas pipe has. Oh well.

Of course! To each their own! I was just unimpressed that the fills were a much lighter color than the rest of the finish and really stand out. The grain on my xmas 2022 is a beautiful birdseye, and the pipe itself is a wonderful smoker that I still love. But on that note there were a few complaints of the fill quality on another forum and I have to agree. Doesn’t make my opinion any less of the company especially with the quality of todays briar compared to just a couple of decades ago. My cheapest pipe in my… Read more »

On my 2022 XMas, the black over stain? Was coming off on my hands as soon as I got it out of the box. I wiped it with a dry soft cotton cloth and it took quite a bit more off. I decided to wipe it all off, the brown under stain was not affected at all. There was a “sort-of” grain, not bald and no fills at all??. I took it to the buffing wheel and waxed it up. No more black dye on my hands, and I can see the grain. It smokes well, maybe even better without… Read more »

Maybe it seems to smoke better without the black over-stain to me because I think it looks better without the black over-stain. I will say, an black stain that let the grain peek through (not ebony) paired with the copper would have looked sharp on my particular pipe anyway-no fills.

Mark, you are right on target, I too am not a big fan of the Heritage finishes. Besides which, and I am sure you know this, putty fills almost always are obvious to the eye. Also, as we all know, a putty filled second oftentimes will smoke just as nicely as a perfect piece of wood. Peterson proved that with the System design a century ago, most of the Standard grade Systems and even some of the Deluxes that come to my shop have putty fills, but also smoke perfectly. By the way I am receiving the Heritage Holmes pipes next… Read more »

Dang, two strikes. I could not remember which was which. I’m not a big fan of bulldogs, so I don’t look at them much. I’m surprised I got the Strand and Deerstalker right.

I like the finish, has a nice look in the hand but I have the whole collection, plus extras. I wish they would release these again in fishtail. P-lips aren’t my favorite on non system pipes (I know, -1 point for my Pete geek status).

Dang it… just when I swore I was done buying pipes for the year! ?

Despise might be too strong of a word for my dislike of the Heritage stain. Peterson’s marketing is working though, I have two Petes with the Heritage finish. It was the copper fittings that sold me….oh look…shiny?

I got a rusticated spigot 69 for my 2022 Christmas pipe, but I will admit that I thought about also getting a Heritage army mount Prince.

If I did get one or two I’d have to rusticate them ??

Sounds like a plan if it’s what you like, just do it?

I have a sandblasted Lestrade & a rusticated Deer Stalker. The Strand, Watson & Professor are speaking to me, but I have promised no more for 2022. So…I won’t!
But…Yet….alas, I am all too well aware of the fact that 2023 starts very soon? … be well
