438. A Peterson Stocking Stuffer: the Rare 1978-79 Peterson-Glass Catalog

Ó, tagaig’ uile is adhraigí
An leanbh cneasta sa chró ‘na luí
Is cuimhnígí ar ghrá an Rí
A thug dár saoradh anocht an Naí.
‘S a Mhuire Mháthair i bParrthas Dé,
Ar chlann bhocht Éabha guigh ‘nois go caomh,
Is doras an chró ná dún go deo
Go n-adhram’ feasta Mac Mhuire Ógh.

Good people all, this Christmas time,
Consider well and bear in mind
What our good God for us has done
In sending His beloved Son
With Mary holy we should pray,
To God with love this Christmas Day
In Bethlehem upon that morn,
There was a blessed Messiah born.

 – from the Wexford Carol (Carúl Loch Garman, Carúl Inis Córthaidh), a traditional Irish Christmas carol originating from Enniscorthy in County Wexford in the 15th or 16th century.

Peterson-Glass Catalog 1978-79 PETERSON PIPE NOTES.ORG

(Download your own PDF)

This is one of my favorite catalogs in the Kapp & Peterson ephemera, documenting those crucial years after the 1975 Centenary and before the Pipeocalypse in the mid-1980s.  In it, the careful observer will find several hours of fascinating information ranging across the innovations in K&P’s shapes, lines & series at the very height of the the company’s creative powers before the world turned its back on pipe smokers and pipe smoking.  It was created by the Glass sundries corporation, which served briefly as K&P’s UK distributor and documents not only several amazing point-of-sale accessories, but more importantly, the Dunmore Premier Unmounted line in both System and Classic Range shapes, the seldom-seen Sculptural System and the almost never seen Freestyle meerschaums.  11.75″ by 8.25″. I have included only K&P’s shapes and lines from pp. 1-17. Enjoy!

For the best experience, I suggest you download the PDF onto a desktop or laptop computer or device, as viewing these complex pages from a phone will not reveal all their wonders.

Merry Christmas, all!

Merry Christmas all. This first anniversary of my wonderful Mum’s passing, I made Christmas Cake and a traditional Figgy Pudding from her now barely legible hand written recipe – made months ago actually for consumption today.. Later today, I’ll light the hobo barrel (a Sleemans Beer keg with the top cut out and air holes torched at the base. Made from stainless steal it never rusts), grab a piece of cake, my 2023 PPN POY and some St. Bruno and reminisce on the blessings in my life; – which include an unlikely (to me) albeit providential discovery on this blog… Read more »

Bishop o’ Briar, thank you for this. First chance to look at it after a full day here at the homestead. A full house, well, nearly so. 3 of four kids were home with spouse / significant other. The middle daughter & her hubby are USAF, she is in Seoul & he in Turkey for a few more months. I loved the quick morning read of blog & the Welsh poem. 👍🏽 All have gone to sleep & I have perused the ’79 catalog. WOW! 😍 Bishop Mark, Many thanks for this… 👀 What an incredible collection of amazing pipes.… Read more »

Yes what a very nice X-Mas treat especial. 1978 is my birth year and I am always very attracted by this kind of style. I was able to found some Dunmore, Sculptured, Aboriginal and Meerschaum so far.

Merry Christmas to all.

Mark: Merry Christmas and thanks so much for the journey back to the 1970’s. I remember well the feeding frenzy on pipes during the early to late 70’s when I was working at our Tinderbox in Portland, Oregon. The Tinderbox franchises had a lot to do with the resurgence of interest in the hobby at that time. It was fun to see the Donegal Rocky in the catalogue as that was the first pipe I bought as an employee of the shop, at the time I recall it retailed for around 10 dollars, later when I was a bit better… Read more »
